Retroperitoneal evaluation

Unlike ultrasound, where digestive overlays create a barrier to ultrasound, computed tomography (CT-Scan) allows a complete visualization of the retroperitoneum. Thus CT-Scan is usually the investigative modality of choice to research lymphadenopathy, assessment of adrenal and pathologies of the abdominal aorta( aneurysms, stenosis), or assessment of the origin of the large abdominal vessels (celiac trunk, mesenteric, and renal arteries). Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is the modality of choice in the diagnosis of retroperitoneal fibrosis, due to a characteristic signal. Assessment of kidney and pancreas was discussed earlier.
