MRI utilizes a powerful magnetic field and radio frequency waves to generate images. MRI offers a good anatomical resolution. It is generally the method of choice for the investigation at the same time of the muscles, tendons, joint surfaces and bones, including bone marrow. It is very efficient for the investigation of the bone tumors, soft tissue structures and inflammatory diseases. The main disadvantages of MRI are its limited availability, its high costs and contra indications for some patients (pacemakers, surgical intracranial metal clips, metallic foreign bodies, particularly intra-orbital, some heart valves, claustrophobia) Occasionally, for a better study of intra-articular structures (labrum, ligaments, partial tears, articular surfaces …), MRI can be combined with arthrography (MRI arthrography) that involves injecting dye into the joint. This injection is done the same day prior to the MRI.
